Education and knowledge exchange

Since BEAM started in 2010 various meetings and workshops have been held with the aim to promote knowledge exchange between researchers from different research fields, but an important focus is also to offer meeting places for younger scientists.

BEAM seminars, workshops and courses ...

BEAM wish to promote collaboration between experts from different fields and levels in their carreer and stimulate multidisciplinary work on Baltic Sea environmental issues.

Among other events, BEAM researchers have arranged two seminar series aimed at postdoctoral students, a two-day meeting for younger researchers on the Askö Laboratory and workshops on the regulations linked to the Baltic Sea eutrophication decision support system. In order to encourage international networking, funding has been made available to cover travel costs for postdocs and PhDs who wish to present BEAM results at international conferences. One example is the ASLO Ocean Science meeting in Hawaii, where BEAM results were presented during several sessions.

Two PhD courses have been co-organized and financed by BEAM, and during the past three programme years a section of the master programme of the Stockholm Resilience Centre has been developed by BEAM researcher Henrik Österblom.

... to educate a wider audience

The lectures on the postdoctoral courses, as well as other Baltic Sea seminars at Stockholm University, have been video recorded and made available online. The aim with all the BEAM films is to offer current and informative knowledge to other researchers, students and everyone else interested in the development of the Baltic Sea. To the films

How will current research strengthen ecosystem-based management of our sea?

How will current research strengthen ecosystem-based management of our sea?

LATEST RESEARCH NEWS FROM BEAM. After BEAM was prolonged through 2015 over 4 MSEK were used for projects in BEAM's sphere of interest. The funded researchers have now summarized their work.

Impact of climate change on the marine environment, group picture at Askö

How is a changing climate linked to my Baltic Sea research?

During a one-week course 16 well-renowned experts connected climate change to our most studied Baltic Sea issues, such as; biogeochemical processes, the carbon cycle and food web structures. It resulted in equipping 20 young researchers from all around the Baltic Sea with new problem-solving skills and knowledge that might help develop strategies for a sustainable Baltic Sea management.

Science for ecosystem-based adaptive management of the Baltic Sea

Since 2010 science within the strategic research programme Baltic Ecosystem Adaptive Management, BEAM, has been conducted with the common aim to support ecosystem-based management of the Baltic Sea environment. Recently 25 BEAM-researchers gathered for 1,5 day’s scientific workshop to present new results and discuss potential future developments.

Legal frameworks for an ecosystem-based management of the Baltic Sea

Are the regulations that steer Baltic Sea management ecosystem-based?

Using an ecosystem approach in managing for example fisheries and eutrophication seems to be something that most Baltic Sea countries strive for, but how is that implemented in the binding laws and regulations? To illuminate that was the purpose of the conference Towards an ecosystem-based legal framework for the Baltic Sea held at Stockholm University on October 7th 2014.

BEAM Research summaries 2013

BEAM science has been conducted since 2010 and on the annual meeting held in November 2013 all on going projects were presented and a series of popular scientific articles and films of seven of the projects were produced to make sure the knowledge was made available to a larger audience.

Baltic Bar - A new meetingpoint for marine researchers at the University

Baltic Bar - gathered marine researchers from many Departments

Stockholm University's Baltic Sea Centre invited everyone active in marine issues at Stockholm University to Baltic Bar on the 12th of February 2014. It gathered about 60 scientists from ten organisations at the University.

Baltic Sea ecology and diversity - seminar series

During week 37 and 39, 2013 a series of seminars linked to the PhD-course: Ecology and diversity of the Baltic Sea, were held at the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences. The seminars were open to everyone.

Transdisciplinary PhD seminar series

During spring 2013 a seminar series with presentations by PhD students working on different aspects of the Baltic Sea environment was arranged. The aim of the series was to show many different perspectives on the Baltic Sea environment, and stimulate exchange and discussions.

Regulations linked to the Baltic Sea eutrophication model

In spring 2013 four meetings about the laws, regulations and political aspects linked to the decision support system for Baltic Sea eutrophication was held to exchange knowledge over disciplinary borders.

Filmed lectures: Modeling as a tool to study the Baltic Ecosystem

In March 2013 about 20 Swedish and international participants on the BEAM course Modeling as a tool to study the Baltic Ecosystem, were offered lectures by over ten experts from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. Below are filmed lectures that cover the most important processes and give an unique overview, as well as in depth knowledge, on existing modeling approaches and their linkages to the Baltic Sea ecosystem.

Modeling as a tool to study the Baltic Sea ecosystem - Possibilities and challenges

BEAM modeling seminar

In May 2013, BEAM invited researchers to an open meeting with the aim to present the Baltic Sea modeling carried out at the Stockholm University as well as to strengthen the linkage between modeling, data collection and experimental work.

BEAM 'young scientists' gathering

The reasons to gather “young” BEAM-researchers on Askö, were to foster co-operation, build active research groups and discuss win-win funding opportunities. It turned out to be a success to discuss and introduce each other within the cluster groups: hazardous substances, laws and management, ecosystem functioning and nutrient enrichment.

BEAM meets ECOCHANGE

March 22-23, 2010, BEAM invited ECOCHANGE, the other Strategic Research Program in Marine Environmental Research, to meet at Gimo, north of Uppsala, to search for opportunities for cooperation.
