From the smallest building blocks of the universe to how galaxies form and evolve over billions of years: this entire range is covered by the University’s world-leading research in particle physics and astronomy. From where do particles gain their mass – will the newly discovered Higgs boson provide the final answer? Did the early universe expand through cosmological inflation? What happens inside an exploding supernova? Can energy-rich particles that reach the Earth tell us about processes in the universe? How were the galaxies and stars formed? What is dark matter and dark energy? Research at the Departments of Astronomy and Physics seeks to answer these and other similar questions. The research area includes theoretical research as well as large-scale experiments and observations.
