Emma Undeman, researcher at Baltic Sea Centre

In the UBC webinar, Emma Undeman will present "Mapping micropollutants emitted in the Baltic Sea catchment via municipal wastewater", which is based on results from the ongoing project CHEMPACT (Status of Chemical emissions via WWTP effluents and impact in the Baltic Sea Catchment) and previous work on this topic done for HELCOM.

 - Municipal wastewater treatment plants are collection points for a broad range of micropollutants and important barriers between urban settings and the aquatic environment, says Emma Undeman. There is a need to update the defintion of wastewater quality in terms of chemical contaminants to stimulate both downstream and upstream measures to reduce emissions.

The webinar: Ensuring water safety from hazardous substances

Wastewater and sewage sludge often contain various hazardous substances and pathogens hampering utilization of the valuable components contained by wastewater and sludge, as well as creating a negative impression of the products based on the recycled components. How are hazardous substances approached on the regional level?

At this webinar we will talk about ways to improve addressing hazardous substances in the wastewater treatment process, how to tackle industrial discharges into the municipal wastewater treatment line, and discuss best ways to raise awareness of citizens regarding their role in this cycle. BSR WATER partners will join the discussion.
