Summer school - Climate of the Baltic Sea Region

Course scope: Past and future changes in climate of the Baltic Sea region. Students will be introduced into fundamental processes of the atmosphere, ocean, sea-ice and land surface with relevance for the climate system.

We will present the available knowledge in the literature about water energy balances and basic methods in analysis and modelling of the regional climate system. Furthermore the course will deal with coupled atmosphere-ocean climate models, climate change, the greenhouse gas effect and other drivers of regional climate, dynamical downscaling and the variability of circulation and regional climate.

With teachers from several disciplines, this course offers a holistiv Earth system approach yet the main focus lie on physical aspects of a changing climate. We will also study the possible impact of climate change on the marine ecosystem, including biogeochemical cycles.

Amongst others, lecturers and supervisors of this course are:

  • Prof. Daniel Conley, University of Lund, Sweden
  • Prof. Christoph Humborg, Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre, Sweden
  • Prof. Markus Meier, Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde and Rostock University, Germany and Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, Sweden
  • Prof. Piia Prost, University of Tartu, Estonia
  • Dr. Marcus Reckermann, Baltic Earth Secretariat, HZG, Geesthacht, Germany

Application: The school is open to undergraduate and graduate students in marine sciences and associated fields.

Application Deadline: 1 May 2017
