Expert meeting on Askö to discuss fisheries management

An international group of leading fish scientists will gather at the fieldstation Askö Laboratory August 25-29. It is the first in a series of workshops in the research project DEMO – DEMOnstration exercise for Integrated Ecosystem Assessment and Advice of Baltic Sea fish stocks.

During the week the group will work intensely with a status evaluation of the Eastern Baltic cod stock and its biotic and abiotic environment under the lead of Maciej T. Tomczak and Christian Möllmann.

The focus will be on implementing the IEA approach for Baltic Sea fish stocks, by combining both tactical and strategic management aspects into a single strategy that supports the present Baltic Sea fish stock advice. Because of the recent problems with the stock assessment of Eastern Baltic cod there is need for detailed analyses of Baltic ecosystem changes in relation to uncertainty, especially with regards to the development of the Eastern Baltic cod stock.

The group aims at drafting both a scientific output and a policy brief for a broader public during the week. Read more on the project webpage.

DEMO - DEMOnstration exercise for Integrated Ecosystem Assessment and Advice of Baltic Sea fish stocks. Project period: 2014-2015

The project is a part of the scientific think tank Baltic Eye at Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre, and led by Maciej T. Tomczak, Stockholm University, Sweden and Christian Möllmann, University of Hamburg, Germany. The workshops are financed by Granholms stiftelse.

Four workshops in a year

Four workshops with different themes will be held during the project period. The workshops will gather scientists from around the Baltic Sea, as well as from other areas, with experience and expertize relevant for each workshop. Each workshop will result in both a scientific output of a per-reviewed paper and a policy brief for a wider audience.
