While BEAM is entirely based at Stockholm University, ECOCHANGE is a joint initiative of Umeå University (Lead institution), the Linnaeus University (Kalmar Campus), the Swedish Natural History Museum and the Coastal Research Laboratory of the Swedish Board of Fisheries. In total 31 scientists participated, 20 from Stockholm University, 7 from Umeå, two from Kalmar, one from the Natural History Museum and 2 from the Coastal Research Laboratory. The first day featured short presentations of research aims by the represented projects, followed by questions and discussions, followed by a joint dinner and an informal get-together. The second day discussions were held on themes of common interest, with the specific intent of fostering joint work. There were clear joint interests in changes in land delivery of dissolved organic matter to the Baltic Sea, in ecosystem effects of climate change and fisheries and in cycling of persistent organic pollutants. Much cooperation should be possible without extra money, but in addition both programs have some funds available to support specific collaborative projects, each to support its own participants, and are now waiting for initiatives.

ECOCHANGE

“The Baltic Sea is threatened by eutrophication, pollution and over fishing. Climate change will probably enhance these problems. ECOCHANGE wants to investigate what specific effects this will have on the Baltic Sea, and look at possible ways to protect the sea.”
