The aim of this pilot study is to improve our understanding of sea ice biomarkers in the Baltic Sea and their potential for application in sediment-based reconstructions of past ice conditions.

The ship-based part of this pilot project will consist of sampling the water column and surface sediments along a transect from the research base in Askö, up to the region of average maximum ice extent just north of the Archipelago Sea. Investigation of lipid biomarkers in the organic fraction of seawater will be based on using in situ pumps, deployed at different water depths.
