Research in the Elementary Particle Physics

Our research focus is within the areas of astro-particle and elementary particle physics.

Currently our most important engagements are the neutrino telescope IceCube at the South Pole and the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

ATLAS - Accelerator based particle physics

The ATLAS experiment is running att CERNs largest accelerator - the Large Hadron Collider, LHC. We are engaged in the construction and operation of two parts of the detector - readout electronics for the hadron calorimeter and the first level calorimeter trigger.

We are analysing data for three specific studies: measurement of the top-quark production cross -section, search for metastable particles and search for Supersymmetry or other phenomena beyond the standard model.

Inside an IceCube string

Ice Cube: Neutrino telescope at the South Pole

IceCube is a detector for high-energy neutrinos. Construction of the detector started during the 2004/2005 season. In its final configuration the detector consists of about 4800 optical modules with phtoto-multiplier tubes sunk into the ice at a depths between 1400 and 2400 m. The 86 strings of optical modules fill a volume of approximately one cubic kilometer.
