Equipment & capabilities

Design & software

The electronics group can draft schematics and design a wide range of printed circuit boards (PCBs) ranging from simple single-sided boards for e.g. sample holders to advanced multi-layer boards for FPGAs, high-speed/frequency or mixed signal applications. We have experience with several manufacturers of PCBs, as well as front panels, enclosures, and racks enabling us to design complete systems.

Besides several open source and freeware tools we have licenses for tools for hardware design, software development and simulation, like:

  • Altium Designer
  • Mentor Graphics (PCB development / signal integrity simulation)
  • Xilinx (Vivado Design Suite -  SDK / ISE / EDK)
  • LabVIEW
  • Solid Edge
  • Comsol Multiphysics

Production & assembly

We can assemble most things from simple to high-voltage, high-frequency, vacuum-suitable cables, from plated-through-hole boards to surface-mounted designs down to 0402 (metric component size 0.4 mm x 0.2 mm) and simple BGAs (Ball Grid Array connection arrangement), and from simple boxes to full racks and subracks. For larger quantities or advanced assemblies and front panels we have experience with external companies. In the workshop we have among other tools:

Instrumentation

Some tools are located in the workshop/Technical Division, others are available elsewhere at the department.

  • EMC (electromagnetic compatibility): Near field probes, current clamp, LISN (Line Impedance Stabilization Network), shielded room
  • Oscilloscopes (4x200 MHz, 2x100 MHz battery powered, faster available at the department)
