In my PhD project, I develop a new method to measure the chlorophyll amount in the water by the means of smart phones. The chlorophyll amount as proxy for algal biomass is one of several key parameters to measure the bio-optical water quality. The new method – called SmartFluo – is in the validation phase. For the validation it is significant to run the method within different water bodies like Wadden Sea, North Sea, Baltic Sea and Open Ocean. The validation measurements for the Wadden Sea and the North Sea were performed in 2015. And the Open Ocean validation measurements will be done during a research cruise in July 2016. In connection with the international inter-calibration workshop at Askö in May, I would be able not only to validate my newly develop method within the Baltic Sea but also to collect valuable water quality data set with an overpass of Sentinel-3 for comparing. This would be a significant step forward for validation of the method and my previous studies at Marine Sensor system group at Carl-von-Ossietzky University of Oldenburg.
