Course description

The course includes lectures on marine remote sensing, bio-optics and Baltic Sea oceanography, a 1 day field trip (exercise on validation of ocean colour sensors; measuring reflectance and taking water samples), and a 1 day laboratory exercise (measuring chlorophyll, SPM, CDOM and SPM). One day is dedicated to a bio-optical modelling workshop. Each student gives a 15 min presentation about their PhD projects.

The invited lecturers are international experts in marine remote sensing and bio-optical research: Prof. Matti Leppäranta, University of Helsinki, Finland, Prof. Stiig Markager, Dept. of Bioscience, Aarhus University, Assoc. Prof. Piotr Kowalczuk (Institute of Oceanology PAN, Poland; Gerald Moore (senior research scientist; member of ESA MERIS Data Quality Working Group), Bio-Optika, Gunnislake; Dr. Susanne Craig, Department of Oceanography, Dalhousie University, Canada; - Prof. Dmitry Pozdnyakov, Nansen International Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre (NIERSC), St. Petersburg.

The course will be arranged together with the Polish Academy of Science, who will provide ship time for students on the research vessel Oceania (on 28 May 2014).
