R/V Electra, Gotska Sandön
Ice sheets terminating in marine environments are highly vulnerable to destabilising processes. Deglaciation of the Baltic (and Bothnian) basins is rather poorly understood, but these basins present an excellent opportunity to uncover the styles and rates of marine-terminating ice sheet decay through the period of warming following the last glacial maximum.
This expedition will target a potential grounding zone (ice-marginal zone) around Gotska Sandön/northern Gotland, aiming to verify this area as a stabilisation zone and map/sample landforms/sediments relating to near-marginal sedimentary processes.
